Subject: Connecting Novell networks of 286 to linux/386bsd

Hi:
I sent linux to friends of mine in Romania. linux on 386s runs fine,
thank you, but they have the following difficulty: most of their PCs are
tied up in Novell Netware networks and those PCs, except for the
servers, are 286s (which cannot run linux/386bsd).
They would like to have linux/386bsd on the server and have dumb terminal
windows (for emacs or vi for example) or even X windows on the 286
slaves. Of course the point is to have access to the rich Unix
programmming environment available on linux/386bsd.
I have to mention there are several (not just one) 286s connected to a 386
server. In Romania, there are hundreds of 286 running just dos/windows,
and I'd like to change that...
I wonder if any of you has any experience in this area? I would
appreciate learning first of all about public domain tools, but if that
is not possible,...
I'd like to mention that Philip Copeland (Sys Admin)
<p_copela@csd.uwe-bristol.ac.uk>, the resident linux comm guru, has
informed me about the existence of a package from CDC, called
Vista-eXceed from control data
described as an X Window Server
which allows one to open X windows on the slaves running Windows. But I
would not mind at all having acces to some other experiences and
preferably referring to public domain stuff..
The network cards seem to be ne1000/2000, if this makes any difference
(I intend to suggest them to use the drivers by D. Becker on the
server).
Please mail or post.
Cheers and thanks,

I hate to be contrary, but "The Programmer's PC Sourcebook" is good if
and only if you need to look up something simple. For example, if you
wanted to directly read from the keyboard controller:
You'd look to page 7-22 & 7-23 (TPPS, 2nd ed). There it says in
section 7.018 "Command value 0x20 - read keyboard controller".
What the h*ll does that mean? How do you use it? What does the
returned value mean?
There are many better books. For example, "IBM Microcomputers: A
programmer's handbook" by Sanchez.
Though I guess I can't fault Hogan too much. The PC architecture is a
friggin mess, with very little standard anything. Everybody does
everything just a tiny bit different. Just enough to screw things up.

Has anyone else had any problems with the backspace in 0.99? I find that
it no longer works, even with terminals and with stty erase '^H' set...but
CTRL H manually works fine.
As an example, try using TRN and 'g news.testr<-BACKSPACE' or some such
thing and see if it says can't find news group news.test^H....
If anyone has any ideas? Drop a line.
P.S. I am using getty/uugetty 2.04 with 0.99 and all patches.

Subject: More 0.99 boot problems (even after fixes)
Date: 16 Dec 92 15:00:19 GMT
Hello all
I have been trying to get 0.99 to boot on my 486 tonight, with no
luck. It's dying in a very strange (to me) place...
The system comes up and appears to sense all of the devices, until
it gets to the call to move_to_user_mode() in init/main.c. When
this call is made, the system just hangs. I can't even
ctl-alt-del reboot. I have to reset the machine.
I'm not very 80x86 assembler literate, so I'm not sure what
move_to_user_mode() is trying to do. Is it 'supposed' to return to
main? If so, it is not. I put a printk() before and after it, and
the one before prints, but nothing thereafter.
My system is a 486 w/ 8Meg, IDE drives, no-SCSI (tried with SCSI
configured in and out...no change), no ethernet (but have TCP in my
0.98-5 kernel w/ no problems...and sock_init() appears to work, just
complains about no ethernet card).
I'd really like to get .99 up...and tested out on my machine before
the holidays.
Does anyone have any pointers on where to proceed from here?
Thanks in advance!!

Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1992 04:11:25 GMT
I have a few questions/suggestions about the .99 release (which may
or may not have been approached yet for resolution); here goes...
1) boot off of the bootdisk created after the installation -- apparently
the system makes comment about the vga selections, as if to prompt the
user to select the appropriate one...but, it keeps on going (yep, i know,
this might be fixed by reading the FAQ and issuing the appropriate rdev
command).
2) When using 'useradd username', the command produces a line of info, and
says that the user id has been set to /home/username -- this directory
was not created and assigned appropriate ownership(s)!
3) sometimes trying to telnet back into the system results in a connection
closed message. had this happen about 3~5 times.
4) I was not able to run elm as a non-root user. got a message back from
elm about having no password...(where's the man page, by the way??? -- not
included/installed).
5) why, at installation time when i'm asked if i have a 486 or floating-point
unit, isn't an appropriate link created for lm.a? (as in ln libsoft.a libm.a)
for the non-FP situation.
6 -- why isn't there a different prompt for a non-root user? I'm getting
confused when i see that '#' prompt and not logged in as root...

thought that if alot more people out in the world that had access to IRC

Of course, you can always login as some other user, then "su"...
I figured this out when accessing my Linux box at work from my box
at home (hey, I'm a newby to sysadmin, OK?). Keeping it this way
gives you two layers of password protection between root access and
the outside world.
This way, the average pimple-faced 14-year-old with his trusty Atari 400
will have about as much chance of gaining root access on your machine as
he has of starting an affair with Princess Diana. Can you say "1/2^128"?
Though I've heard that since the Royal Couple split up, his chances with
the Princess are somewhat better of late...

Hi y'all.
I have been running linux since 0.98.3 (SLS), and have been having
minor problems:
xdvi:
I know there is a simple fix for this. I get a floating
point exception and a core dump (I use mathemu) whenever
I invoke. I tried getting new sources, but make chokes
on FS_SYNC undefined. Anyone have a fix, or tell me
where I get whatever lib or include that defines FS_SYNC?
(I apologize for the lack of detail - I had an article
made up at home, but my floppy got trashed on the way to
work)
I upgraded tyhe kernel to 0.99-45 just three days ago, and got new
binaries for usr/bin from the latest SLS distribution. However,
these two errors still occur:
ps aux
USER PID CPU MEM SIZE RSS TT STAT START TIME COM
error reading kmem (offset = 0x4010000)
adm 32768 0.0 799.9 4 131068a0 S 21:13 0:00
I tried to fix this with ps -U, but the net result was that
ps simply didn't try to display processes at all.
time:
warning: time using old stat() call. recompile (but I got the latest usr/bin)
Finally, I have been making no progress with getting lpd, lpr to work.
I got the ported BSD that resides on tsx-11.mit.edu in the form of
binaries, installed it, was surprised about some of the paths (but I guess
that is the porters discression), and changed the GID of the binaries
to daemon, and the spool directories to UID & GID daemon. I also changed
the GID of /dev/lps (serial printer) to daemon. I setup the printcap and
away we go:
lpr fubar.txt
lpr: connect: invalid argument
jobs qued, but cannot start daemon
The same thing happens if I try to use lpc to start and stop
printers. Any ideas?

My deepfelt gratitude to all, and especially Linus for the amazing
contributions to the world. I think it is easy to loose sight of
what an amazing contribution this OS is. When I discovered linux,
I promptly sold my Mac due to various grievances concerning their
policies, and seriously overpriced hardware. Linux has set me free,
free from hardware woes, free from cost woes, and free to finally
do something interesting with computers I can afford. I am, of course,
also set free to spenmd long evenings trying to figure out why lpr won't
work - but at least I didn't pay money for the privelige of trying
to figure it out. Happy holidays and thanks again.

this happens by default, if you only have the virtual consoles in /etc/securetty.
To do the latter you will need to alter login.

Subject: [SCSI] Gateway 2000 EISA w/Ultrastor 24F
Date: 16 Dec 92 15:47:01 GMT
A friend of mine has a Gateway 2000 EISA machine with an Ultrastor 24F
SCSI adapter installed. Naturally, Linux does not recognize the 24F.
The source code for the 14F driver indicates that it might work with the
24F some modifications. Anyone know what modifications might be needed?
The first I can think of is how to get Linux to detect the card....
Also, the docs for the 24F indicate that it can operate in an ISA mode
if so configured. Would this be the route to follow?
Any help appreciated...
